Educational Value

The program is a video series teaching children grades Pre-K to Grade 3, and older students with developmental disabilities to read and spell words. With five-minute videos, the parent is trained to teach the program at the same time the student(s) learn to read. With puppets, animation, and children in a clubhouse, students are taken through the wonderful world of reading. It has 77 episodes divided into four seasons. The first two seasons teach letter sound concepts, and seasons three and four teach bigger words with syllables. The program is based on Orton Gillingham/Science of Reading and is systematic and multi-sensory. Students are provided with the same materials in their homes that are modeled in the videos. Sample materials can be found on our website. They include: Bumpy Letter Alphabet cards, Felt Boards, Magic Boards, and a workbook for each season. There is no teacher’s guide, all information is found at the bottom of workbook pages in "To the Teacher". Multi-sensory techniques modeled in the videos include Finger Spelling Hand and Jet Pilot which teaches children to sky write words. Chef Cookie teaches sound blends with a whisk and bowl. More advanced syllable concepts are taught by Silly Bull (syllable) and Syllable Scientist. Bear-ly the Bad Reader Bear is a stuffed bear sitting in a corner of the "Clubhouse". Bubble thoughts over his head share his fears that he can't learn to read. The children in the clubhouse and puppets encourage Bear-ly. He learns, just more slowly. Our goal for students, depending on ability, is for them to read and spell any word by the end of third grade after completing all four seasons.
